What do you see on the card?
A winged angel blows a golden trumpet among the clouds, and from the trumpet hangs a white banner with a red cross. Below, people — men, women and children — rise from their tombs, arms opened toward the sky. Snowy mountains stand in the background. Waite's own text names the card The Last Judgment.
- The trumpet — the inner call you can no longer ignore.
- The banner with the cross — the balance of opposites and redemption.
- The open arms — acceptance and the joy of awakening.
- The opening tombs — the old self you step out of.
- The snowy mountains — the road already traveled and a clean new start.
The story of the card
The Wanderer went on along the path of light. As he came down into the valley, a strange sound filled the air. He did not hear it with his ears, and yet he knew: this call was meant for him.
Among the mountains, above the ruins, an angel raised a golden trumpet to his lips. The sound ran the length of the valley, and it seemed that everything that had ever passed away now took on a new meaning.
The Wanderer stopped, and deep in his heart he felt it: the time had come to leave the old burdens behind. He forgave others — and, most importantly, he forgave himself.
The Wanderer lifted his eyes toward the light and knew: a new chapter was beginning.
The past is closed. The soul is free to fly.
UprightJudgement Meaning
Awakening, renewal, an inner call. When Judgement appears upright, it is time to hear what your life truly wants — and to say yes to it.
Waite links the card with "change of position, renewal, outcome." In a modern reading it is also the card of forgiveness and release: settling accounts with the past so you can move on freely.
ReversedJudgement Reversed
Reversed, Judgement can point to harsh self-criticism and self-blame — when the weight of the past will not let you move forward.
It can also mean ignoring the call, or fearing change. The question is: what would you hear if you grew quiet?
